ILE-IFE: THE CRADLE OF A RACE

BY TAIWO OMONIYI OTITOLAYE

Ancestral Context and Cultural Foundation

Ile-Ife means an expanse of land and love.
It is far beyond a settlement. It was a civilization that radiated governance, art, iron, beads, and priesthood across regions. The name carries a promise of space and continuity. To speak of Ile-Ife is to speak of a source from which many peoples and traditions have flowed.

The memory held in Ife traditions reaches across civilizations. It speaks to Kemet and Alkebulan. It speaks to Memphis and Abbysinia. These connections are carried in symbols, beadwork, crowns, iron, and in how governance was ordered.

The Atlantis Age

Within this long memory is the historical Atlantis. In that age there was great knowledge and scientific evidence. Scholars such as Pobenus, the German archeologist with a Kenyan mother, linked present day South West Nigeria to the Atlantis age in his work.
This gives academic weight to what tradition and the IFA COMPENDIUM has long held.

The Era of Deluge

When excess overcame balance, the Deluge came. Much of the continent sank and the waters scattered peoples.

Ife Ooyelagbo

From the waters came a new age. The Yoruba count this as the Seventh Era of the YORUBA. It is called Ife Ooyelagbo. The Era of the Survivors.

Survivors gathered and rebuilt. They carried forward the codes of governance, spirituality, and craft.
This was not only about rebuilding a city. It was about rebuilding a way of life with dignity. The OMOLUABI.

High spirituality was embedded in the Ifa Compendium. The Compendium provided law, ethics, medicine, profound science, and history. It tied human conduct to cosmic balance. Because of this, governance was streamed in checks and balances designed to rise above authoritarianism. Councils, lineages, priesthoods, and guilds held distinct roles. Power was not concentrated in one ruler. Consensus was required.

The same principle shaped the economy. In the markets of city and village, usury was absent. Trade rested on fairness and reciprocity. This was in unison with the statue of welfarism. Care for elders, children, and strangers was treated as public duty. It is the hallmark of the Yoruba.

The Okun Lineage

The Okun people hold a direct lineage. Most Okun subgroups, including the Oworo and Yagba, trace lineage straight to Ile-Ife. Their settlements predate the present-day city of Ile-Ife.

This antiquity is visible in language, naming, and ritual. Dialects retain old Ife tonalities. Names carry compressed history. Among them are Ikusemoro, Medaiyese, Otitolaye, Ifajemila, Ikusagba.
Each name points to priesthood, covenant, migration, war, and survival.

The Oriki as Living Record

The oriki of Okun clans are concise and weighty. They speak to origin, value, and the dignity of a house. In a few lines an oriki can name a migration route, a trade, a taboo, and a responsibility to land and people. Oriki are recited at birth, at chieftaincy, and at moments of conflict. They are pygeatry in the truest sense. They compress eras into speech. When an Oworo elder recites, the listener hears the Seventh Era.

Continuity: The Law of Life

There are mini eras within large eras. This includes the period of interregnum, transformations and rejuvenation of the ancient linens. This trend holds its bearings in response to the Law of Life which drives interactions in the lower rung of God’s creation.

ILE-IFE is our heritage.
