The traditional ruler of Egume community in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Chief Ochimana Simon Anu, has condemned alleged practice of selling one’s own kidney said to be a current trend among youths in the community.
The youths were alleged to be selling their kidneys to raise money for expensive motorcycles and other material possessions.
The traditional ruler, in a statement issued by his media aide, Momoh Idris Ospaca, described the reported development as disturbing and dangerous,
He warned that the pursuit of quick wealth could leave affected youths with permanent health complications and jeopardise their future.
He called on the youths to shun any scheme that could compromise their lives in exchange for material wealth.
The monarch also warned individuals allegedly acting as agents for kidney buyers to leave the community or face sanctions.
He said the community would no longer tolerate activities capable of endangering the lives of its young people.
Anu expressed concern over the growing attraction to quick wealth among some youths, urging them to embrace legitimate livelihoods, vocational skills and other productive ventures.
He said health and humanity ought to take priority over material possessions while cautioning young people against being deceived by the apparent wealth of others or the temptation of quick money.
The traditional ruler directed the establishment of a security committee to investigate cases involving youths, particularly underage persons, who suddenly acquire expensive motorcycles.
The committee, according to the statement, is expected to scrutinise the sources of funds used to purchase motorcycles reportedly valued between N1 million and N2 million and determine whether any criminal or exploitative activities are connected to such acquisitions.
The monarch further directed that anyone found to be involved in the alleged kidney-selling activities would face sanctions in line with the traditional laws and customs of the community.
He appealed to parents, community leaders and residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities that could expose young people to exploitation or life-threatening practices.
